The 10 th Muse

This painting is designed to illustrate the kick-off for my ‘Muses Collection’, which I have already started working on. The collection of paintings based on the 9 Inspirational Muses, divinities of the Greek-Roman ancient world, mythological presences known as “minor goddesses” which inspire original creativity.

In the listing as found in most literature about the 9 Inspirational Muses, there is Calliope, the most known, the muse of epic poetry; Thalia, the joyous, the muse of comedy who hold a comic mask and 7 fascinating others, but there is one missing so I have created a 10th: The young girl portrayed represents the Inspirational Muse for the fine arts. As an archetype of a young woman, on the brink of not being a girl anymore as a source of inspiration to create art.

The 10th Muse is carrying two emblems: a (plush toy) Bee, where the bee stands symbol for vitality and creativity being key competences in an artist’s life. In her other hand she is holding a (balloon) cactus. The cactus, symbol of persistence and eternity pointing out the commitment of an artist to create something immortal.
