Nuzzo Monello, a “multifaceted genius …” as an artist and a scholar

“I can’t do anything, unless I’m considered a Being”: that is what he tells me in his farewell, reminding me of the motto of his life, my friend teacher Nuzzo Monello, after having briefly hinted at this engaging “Anthology”, by the evident naturalistic and archaeological form: an additional and unexpected test of his multifaceted activities as an Artist and a Scholar, as I am leaving, after the fashion of Dante, to the Others the chance to reflect “with better voices” on the scientific and artistic-literary value that strongly emerges from these pages just while browsing them.

Born in Avola on 6th June, 1946, after a life spent in the school world as a teacher and director of Middle School, Nuzzo Monello lived in Noto until he retired and happily “took refuge” in his villa on the hill Sant’Elia, in the Hyblaean mountains of his Avola, which he defines as “the fancy places in the perennial quest for Beauty, the only source and destination of Being, which puts into practice the respect of the person and any other manifestation.”: all my attempts of a “logical analysis” in its expressions have been in vain, because only after a while I “feel” them, but I do not understand right away “how much and how” are steeped in the philosophical “heroic frenzy” style of Giordano Bruno’s, flared as they are artistically and emotionally with the personal anxiety, as a whole, of a late neoclassical root, typical of the infinite ascent to Being, who, in his opinion, is the only perennial source in search for Beauty!

“This is the only way, in this - let us say - neoclassical but new “interpretive key,” I can have but a limited approach to the inner world of a multifaceted Artist and a Man, I would say, Homerically, by the “multiform genius” as Nuzzo Monello, if it is true that it is not easy to define the limits or boundaries of his cultural commitment, as well as difficult, sometimes astonishing were the more than surprising results of his incessant, daily militancy in the aesthetic search for Beauty, meant by Kant as “what pleases universally without concept”, that is aprioristically free from any interest that drowns our artistic judgment.

Therefore, before advancing in this “Anthology”, whose naturalistic and archaeological science I could not relate at all, it is necessary on our side to retrace at least the stages of his long way in the three aspects or “faces” of his tireless artistic and cultural activities, in which, from time to time, his excellent and uncommon ability of creative talent have shown him both as a photographer and as a painter and lastly as a ceramic sculptor: here, then, we will limit ourselves to a dense and essential bio-bibliographical mention to guide us in his impressive curriculum.

Married to Mrs. Corrada Spataro, a teacher with whom he had two children - Venerando (1975) and Paolo (1977) - Nuzzo Monello began his career in the 1960s signing Venerand his early paintings, clothes, scarves, curtains and founded a stylistic Atelier of his own, making unisex clothes, shirts, ties, scarves and shoes. In 1970 he exhibited in Rome at Piazza Di Spagna and Piazza Navona. In 1971 he began his teaching activities in Italian high schools, while his interest was concerned with and expanded towards Photography and the enhancement of Noto’s Baroque, with his “First photo exhibition on Noto’s Monuments”, which saw in the front row his students of the “G. Aurispa” State School in Noto (1971/72).

Monello in 1973appeared at the Civic Museum of Avola with his first “Solo Exhibition of Blow-ups” made entirely on his own, while adhering to the Sicilian Ecological Programme and to the one of Cultural Heritage Enhancement. He was a close friend of Bruno Ragonese’s, with whom, together with the Zoo Agency of Sicilian Fauna, which later became Sicilian Fauna Agency, he started, in the 70’s, his environmental studies: Monte Alveria, Cava Grande del Cassibile and, in particular, for the safeguard of Vendicari’s “Tomboli”, which then promoted the establishment of the Oasis of Vendicari and the protected Area of Cava Grande in Avola. The result of those studies can be found in the works at the Universities of Messina and Catania; without saying that, on the second anniversary of the death of Bruno Ragonese (11th February, 2006) Monello was called to recall his figure and work in his human and social dimension.

During his compulsory military service, in 1972, Nuzzo Monello participated both in a Collective Exhibition of Contemporary Artists in Savona and, in 1976, in the “Avola - The Almond City” extemporaneous exhibition. In 1977 he took part in the 1st Market Exhibition of paintings and graphics by contemporary artists as part of Avola’s Summer and, thanks to his gained experience, imposed himself as an organizer of group and solo exhibitions of paintings; still in that period, he made, to be diffused freely, postcards and calendars, showing a particular interest in the working class areas of Agliastrello and Mannarazzi in Noto, while “caring” for the enhancement of the local Handicrafts.

In 1982 he was appointed Artistic Director and Master Infioratore of the Infiorata in Via Corrado Nicolaci in Noto and, from 1983 to 1989, with the full support of several Noto’s Administrations, spread throughout the world the Value and the date of the 3rd Sunday in May for the same event.

In 1990 Nuzzo Monello published “L’educazione all’immagine, contributo all’orientamento” , as a result of a school survey in 1985, while he was revising Mario Rossitto’s “Nunn’è ri nuddu a Terra” published by “Il Carretto”, Noto; in 1991, he was the author of “Appunti sul Territorio Montano di Noto”, a photo Album, in which better still, his quality as a great photographer and talented painter stand out. It must be also said that, at that time, he also established himself as a pedagogue essayist with national publications, as evidenced by his presence in the European Thesaurus.

Among the various activities, Nuzzo Monello can boast the direction, given by the MIUR at the Provincial Observatory for School Absenteism in Syracuse, and, from 1996 to 1998, was a teachers’ Trainer on modern Educational Technology and Information. It goes without saying that he was responsible for the realization of the school library at the “A. Manzoni “ Middle School in Priolo Gargallo and, some years later, he was appointed as the artistic director of the ‘Palio del Grano’ (2002-2004) in Rosolini, where he was the creator and producer of the”Carato del grano” as well as of the Pitrè Museum at the “F. D’Amico” Institute in the same city, also promoting the first itineraries for the development of the cave sites and Hypogea in the territory of Rosolini.

In 2009 he published “the book of Noto”, an easy tourist guide and, it must be remembered that, from 1995 he had already been appointed as a Headmaster of State Middle Schools, which he continued until 2011, when he retired.

Since then, he has been racing against time to create the interior creative storm that has made him achieve new unthinkable heights in the art of Ceramics, as I have repeatedly written and, since 2013, has dedicated himself to this Art in his Lutum Chtonia Hybla Laboratory: on whose artistic and philosophical system I invite the readers to browse the many pages, which I have published at www.valdinotomagazine.it1.

Nothing more, finally, to recall this Artist and Scholar, but underlining and re-associating the image of Nuzzo Monello to the extraordinary Dante’s Homeric figure of the Man’s multi-faceted genius, who, like a new Ulysses of our days - in addition to that as a photographer, painter and ceramist - by this massive scientific and archaeological Anthology, sprung up from his ancestral roots in the Hyblaean Sant’Elia, might have gone a lot farther than his usual pillars of Hercules, beyond which he would have never accorded “wings” to the “mad flight” of this wonderful volume if, once reached such a “maturity of science and conscience”, he wanted to finally show and prove another “dimension” or “face” of his deepest Being: the fourth, that is, the one of the Scientist, who ventures without fear into such an “open” sea, as the natural-archaeological one, quite certain that no shipwreck will ever drown him!

Nevertheless, by my auspicious omen, I will leave any further judgment to the readers - who will want to reflect on these pages - convinced as I am that Nuzzo Monello, by his famous lines “You were not made to live like brutes / but to follow virtue and knowledge” has always treasured them for himself and, in his works, for us, too: and for this, therefore, we are grateful to him with all our hearts.

Science cannot be either brave or moral: it is reason and consequence.

In the century of science, after Galileo, investigating the nature of plants and their reproductive systems was still considered disbelief, immorality and licentiousness.

These were the accusations and condemnation, which botanist C. Linnaeus underwent in the approach of his systematic studies for the classification of plants.

It meant concealing, hiding the evidence, the celebration of the “Wedding of Plants”, which in Nature was evident and well known with the Supreme success of flowers, their fruits and their seeds.
