Mario Salvo M° Internazionale

Enchanted visions by Nuzzo MONELLO: from the brush to the clay, through the petals

Several times I have quoted and described the Sicilian artists as complete and greatly prepared artists, who, artistically, possess the necessary qualities to emerge in the great pictorial "mare nostrum", where, unfortunately, there is currently a great stylistic confusion and colour production, mostly superficial, sterile and hasty: almost as if Art was now relegated to the practice of "hit and run", without a conceptual archetype, for the structure of a possibly emotional and concretely beautiful work and so create the conditions to make it fascinating, where the attentive eye manages to define the great work done for its exaltation. The people of the South, who are so passionate to follow, in a manic way, the professional artistic development, without getting tired of perfecting their mastery both in technical dexterity and in the in-depth and specific research of what is fundamental to know and practice how this stubborn, sensitive and so motivated method of the artist, by inner travails, as to make it capable of materializing his own thoughts and feelings in the various sectors of art.

Nuzzo Monello, a native of Avola, predisposes my critical sense to the sharing of his origin, since 1920, it has been the place of decorative and artistic care of "Sicilian carts", which my grandfather and my father, the "Salvos" used to make. I feel in him a lot of the same artistic skills as a true pioneer, almost as if the town was the centre of creative and emotional genius. I received from the artist a myriad of well-sown and widely collected curriculum material: he, as a stranger and isolated man from the artistic currents, by his choice, wants to exalt, through his wonderful ceramics, a strong and innate concept that is part of his DNA "Lights in Shadows ". I have seen in him a lot of love for art and all its connected facets: from the brush to the flowery petals for the “Infiorata”, through the manipulation of the clay for his extraordinary, colorful and very beautiful ceramics. In my opinion, it seems that the pictorial realizations, so colorful and vigorous, act as sketches to his performing ceramics, both for their chromatic miscellany and for their enveloping shapes. The warmth of the colour is his primary inner need: through his magical dough, he breaks the didactic patterns of everyday life and relocates them right to the centre of his personal chromatic emotional Cosmos It can be noticed in such great works as "Reason", "Eve Gea", "Psyche", "Pandora", "Aspiration", etc. They are all creations, whose boundless values of bold hues intersect, merging into a single body, generating daring works of rare beauty. Analyzing his important curriculum, I also noticed a diligent search for the dissemination, protection and research of the cultural and artistic heritage of the city of Noto, the world capital of Baroque and famous for its Infiorata, which Monello was in charge of, for decades, as a Technical and Artistic Manager. Even there, he was able to demonstrate widely all his remarkable skills and artistic ability by placing the infiorata in a fascinating journey of unrepeatable achievements. Not everyone can range over different areas, succeeding everywhere in exciting the public .. !! Also, his experiences, in the photographic field, enhance his active soul, spasmodically in search for moral and human justice, as well as turned to the surrounding degradation for a greater attention to the surrounding territory, familiar to him, where affections and memories intertwine indissoluble bonds that embody his existence, as a total artist and a lover of beauty and the environment he lives in.
