On the threshing-floor of a farmhouse whose walls bear witness to its age, four peasants are busy around an ox. The sunlight shines intensely on the uneven stones of the ground and on parts of the walls, creating thoughtful colour relationships, as on the sheet that has been laid out and is only half-lit. The solemn and calm tone of the scene is indicative of a new disposition on the part of the painter, less experimental but more attentive to a calm and composed rendering of the natural datum, in any case supported by the elevation of the form.
